Key Themes to Emerge at Home Care 100 Next Week

AlayaCare on site at top industry conference January 19-22 in Miami

Next week, the nation’s top conference for leaders in home and hospice care heads to Miami as Home Care 100 lands January 19-22. This is one of the most important opportunities for members of these growing and shifting industries to unite and strategize together to meet the needs of clients and payers moving forward.

Our team at AlayaCare is pleased to attend and lend our insights as part of a broad-reaching program that touches on key themes impacting home care agencies right now. Here we lay out an assortment of presentations we plan on attending within themes that are driving home care into the near future.

I) STRATEGIES AND RISK IN NEW PAYMENT MODELS & PAYER SOURCES

As our CEO, Adrian Schauer, details in his 2020 forecast from late last year, the industry is quickly embarking on a strategy of having diverse payer sources. This is a natural evolution when a measure of uncertainty floats in the air.

We are seeing private pay agencies intermingle with public payers and health authorities. For two years we’ve watched the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) unlock more opportunities for home care providers via Medicare Advantage supplemental benefit plans. (Nine out of 10 agencies are expected to contract with MA plans this year.) Such a move makes sense amidst a shift toward agencies providing more broad-level wellness strategies for people living with chronic illness.

None of us are strangers now to value-based purchasing, an undercurrent to these changing models. The push to curb escalating health-care costs includes holding providers’ care accountable for the cost and quality of their care. (As we explore in this guide, opportunities abound for VBP.)

And the Home Care 100 agenda rightly brings risk tolerance into the discussion. Industry veterans will lend unique viewpoints about their approach to the risk/value balance:

PDGM in Action! Early Results, Long-Term Outlook (Jan 20, 8 – 9 a.m.)

Few topics are as intriguing as PDGM for agencies today. Here, executives from Fazzi, Humana at Home, Encompass Health, Amedisys and BAYADA will detail their experiences in a redesigned home health payment structure that puts value and client needs first. (Here’s a handy overview of the model from the CMS.)

MA Benefit Expansion: Forecasting the Future (Jan 20, 2:15 – 3 p.m.)

Medicare Advantage will soon include non-medical home care services. This is going to be an interesting picture, with new partnerships forming, and new challenges for providers. This is also a key area where technology plays a core role as agencies must have a seamless data flow to MA plans, EHR and EVV systems, and more. That same data must also prove that home care is improving client care.

Embracing Risk, 2020-2025 (Jan 21, 8:45 – 9:45 a.m.)

When it comes to reimbursement, say goodbye to the status quo. Leaders from CLA, the LHC Group, Encompass Health, Highmark Health and the Visiting Nurse Service of New York will detail their insight into risk-based payment models.

Premier At Risk for Total Cost of Care (Jan 21, 10:40 – 11 a.m.)

One agency in the northeast has walked the walk with embracing risk for much of this decade. Premier’s chief Gregory Turchan will detail how they generated a positive economic return and improved health outcomes within Medicaid Managed Care and Dual Eligible plans while fielding 20% risk for cost of care.

II) CULTURE AND WELLNESS

Adrian also touched on the shift from care to wellness in that 2020 forecast, and on how this year will mark a major turning point in not only care delivery but in homecare’s crucial role in overall wellness for both patients and caregivers, too.

This is a major theme this year’s Home Care 100 Conference, including a keynote focusing on the importance of good company culture, and how strong values translate into strong businesses.

We’re also excited to attend several sessions that explore important advances in recruitment and retention, new models for understanding and addressing the social determinants of health, and emerging specializations in dementia care.

We’re also thrilled that our clients, BAYADA and Saint Elizabeth Health Care, are part of a panel that will discuss new service line frontiers with the freedom of flexible home care technology. This decade, technology is poised to become the prime-time player in helping agencies support the wellness of clients and employees alike, and we’re looking forward to listening to the panelists explore the most promising service lines for home care into the future. Here are the sessions focused on culture and wellness you don’t want to miss:

The Culture of ‘Flow’ – How Good Values Beget Good Business (Jan 21, 8 – 8:45 a.m.)

World-renowned business innovator Michael Crooke whose tenure includes Patagonia, Revolution Living, Pearl Izumi, KeVita and Avamere Health Services will explore how to nurture ‘Flow’ within organizations to develop strong staff morale, personal growth and a healthy bottom line.

Innovations in Recruitment, Retention and Culture (Jan 21, 11:40 a.m – 12:50 p.m.)

Innovation in recruitment and retention practices is a vital subject facing our industry. And it’s one we keep in mind at AlayaCare when building software that can empower caregivers to do more with their time. Adding value for caregivers goes beyond compensation, after all. Here, we’re excited to discover some inventive staffing initiatives from the Lincoln Healthcare Leadership team.

Social Health Bridge: Tackling Social Determinants of Health (Jan 22, 9:10 – 9:30 a.m.)
If we want to limit stress, improve mental health, create healthier populations, reduce ER visits, free up hospital beds, and help people live well at home, then health-care must tackle the social determinants of health. Here, we are interested in learning about Health Bridge Centene’s new model Social Health Bridge™, which acts as a financial and interventional layer between the health sector and the social sector.

Senior Helpers: Launching Dementia Day Centres  (Jan 22, 9:50 – 10:10 a.m.)

We’ll be at this session to learn from personal care provider Senior Helpers, in partnership with Glenner Alzheimer’s Family Centers on how they’re creating a network of franchised “Town Square” adult day centers specializing in dementia care, using the concept of reminiscence therapy.

New Service Line Frontiers in Home Care (Jan 22, 8 – 9 a.m.)

Our clients, Nancy Lefebre, Chief Clinical Officer of Saint Elizabeth Health Care and Donna Heatherly, Practice President, Habilitation, BAYADA Home Health Care join Adam Blumenthal, Managing Partner, Blue Wolf Capital Partners, Susan Sender, Chief Clinical Officer, BrightSpring Health Services and moderator Mike Dordick, President of McBee Associates to explore the most promising service lines for home care into the future.

At AlayaCare, we’re all about configuring customized care, with a robust platform to scale to meet the needs of multiple services to ultimately promote better outcomes across all sectors of care.

III) Bonus: Mergers and Acquisitions

One session on Monday (Home Care M&A Outlook, 2:15 – 3 p.m.) will analyze recent acquisitions in our industry and forecast what’s coming in home health, personal care and hospice. On that note, we’d urge agencies to remember that technology is key to growth, whether by acquisition or by scaling operations via more sites. Don’t settle for software solutions that focus only on the well-known issues in today’s industry, but those that predict ones to come.
