AlayaCare R&D department AlayaLabs putting people at the centre of innovation investments

AlayaLabs

Award-winning home care software provider AlayaCare, ramps up AlayaLabs, their R&D department focused on Artificial Intelligence (AI), optimization and machine learning technologies to help home and community care organizations deliver better client outcomes and improved employee experiences. The company has been granted $1.8M in funding from government and investment ventures to support AlayaLabs and help contribute to the development of a world-class Canadian AI ecosystem.

Naomi Goldapple, who joined the AlayaCare team in September 2019, will lead the company’s innovation strategy and will focus on applied research in machine learning and optimization applications. Goldapple comes to AlayaCare fromement AI where she led the product and business development for AI products in the transportation and logistics sector.

“We’re building a bridge between what our clients need and what science can deliver,” said Naomi Goldapple, Head of AlayaLabs at AlayaCare. “We can improve business efficiency, while addressing issues that have a major impact on organizations such as employee retention and hospital readmissions. Importantly, we can also leverage machine learning to optimize care planning and suggest pathways that may lead to a heightened quality of care.”

AlayaLabs’ strategy centres on creating a system of intelligence that augments human decision-making. Through a myriad of touchpoints, AlayaLabs’ approach includes applied research to improve the performance of our product, business intelligence delivered as services, and fundamental research to grow AlayaCare and its clients’ businesses:

  • Product: Delivering platform enhancements that optimize product key functions. A consistent complaint from care workers, and retention challenge, is inconsistent hours and schedules. AlayaCare client, VHA Home HealthCare (VHA), cited that home care workers can travel up to 4 hours to complete 8 hours of care delivery. AlayaLabs machine learning capabilities streamline travel times and optimizes routing to improve travel costs and incorporates mapping for better staffing and client coordination. On average, we are finding up to 30 per cent reduction in travel time.
  • Services: Providing clients with dashboards and actionable business insights. According to the 2019 Home Care Benchmarking Study, by market research and education firm Home Care Pulse, the median caregiver turnover reached an all-time high of 82 per cent. AlayaLabs is working on churn prediction and hiring optimization tools to help all customers decrease caregiver turnover rates.
  • Research: Continuously investing in R&D for future products and services and collaborating with universities and professors to access to state-of-the-art methods. Opportunities for research include improvements to patient risk score model, quality of visit predictor, voice to text vitals, remote care monitoring devices and shift offer / vacant shift optimization.

“Companies like AlayaCare are paving the way to advancing the home care industry, setting standards for home care of the future,” said Associate Professor Nadia Lahrichi, Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering, Polytechnique Montreal. “I’m thrilled to work alongside the AlayaLabs team to apply modeling and operations research tools in real time with AlayaCare clients who, too, are focused on delivering better outcomes and taking patient care to the next level.”

Over the last five years, AlayaLabs has used client insights to optimize the AlayaCare platform and has integrated innovative technologies such as a patient app, Telehealth dashboard, Family Portal, RPM software, and machine learning algorithm-based clinical support tools because they allow for better coordination and quality of care across the healthcare continuum.

“The people delivering and receiving home care have increasingly high expectations for their experience—and they should. Our purpose is to deliver the care we’d want our loved ones to receive and AI-powered technology is transforming the way care is delivered. That means people aging in place—regardless of whether they live in a city or rural community—can access the care they need, when and where they want it,” added Goldapple.
